Mokai
Mokai's soulful vocals, powerful grooves, smokin' blues riffs, spoken word and a wide variety of styles and moods make for a show-stopping set. Since the release of his debut CD "Unearthed" in 2003, Mokai has made over 200 appearances, at coffeehouses, nightclubs, house concerts and on radio stations, and festivals as diverse as North Beach Jazz Fest to Reggae on the River, from Earthdance World Music Fest to the Humboldt Folklife Fest. KFOG's Rosalie Howarth says "Great message in a vivid, deftly expressed package...incredible live!" Mokai has a monthly residency called CAUSE at the Elbo Room in San Francisco where he raises money for a different progressive cause each month, and he has a long history of art and activism. www.mokaiMusic.com
Mia and Jonah
Since their arrival in the Bay Area, Mia and Jonah have built a strong fan and diverse fan base. They have performed at venues ranging from the Bay Area's Elbo Room to Northern Cali's Reggae on the River, sharing stages with artists such as Ben Harper, Michael Franti, Jolie Holland, and Austin Willacy. With roots stretching from Hawaii to Pittsburgh, PA, Mia and Jonah write songs that forge an immediate connection. Mia's sultry voice melds with Jonah's earthy tones to create a distinctive vocal blend. With music weaving together genres including folk, jazz, blues, and country, this Oakland-based duo delivers a stunning performance that is both innovative and provocative. www.miaandjonah.com
Jason Miller
Blending traditional Americana folk sounds with ethnic influences, one finds traces of klezmer and brazilian accents in his eclectic compositions. Heartwarming performances are delivered solo and sometimes with such varied instrumentation as violin, clarinet, percussion and electric guitar. His new album, 114 Echo Ave, showcases Jason's ability to find the intimate. Recorded entirely live and in some cases in one take, 114 Echo Ave demonstrates Jason's natural ability to carry a song. It was this ability that landed him a spot in the 2003 Berkeley Folk Festival. Since then he has performed many times in the bay area and on the road. In addition to a performance for the 40th anniversary of the Free Speech Movement, Jason organized a tour of the swing states in the fall of 2004, in support of the grassroots anti-Bush movement. www.bigheartmusic.net
